What a precision machine shop's website needs that a generalist will miss

A general web designer will make a machine shop's site look tidy — and miss the handful of things that decide whether a procurement buyer actually enquires.

A general web designer can make a precision machine shop’s website look clean and modern. What they usually can’t do is build the site to win the enquiry — because winning a machining enquiry turns on things a generalist has no reason to know about. Here’s what actually matters, from the buyer’s side of the desk.

Capability stated the way a buyer searches, not the way you’d describe it

A buyer doesn’t look for “precision engineering.” They look for a process, a material and a size: 3-axis vs 5-axis, the work envelope, the alloys you run, the tolerances you hold. A generalist will write “CNC machining services” on one page and move on. That single page can’t rank or get recommended for the dozens of specific things you actually do.

The fix is a page per real capability — milling by axis and envelope, turning by bar capacity, the materials you specialise in — each stated in the buyer’s terms. It’s more work, and it’s exactly the work that gets you found for the jobs you want more of.

A machine list that lets an engineer self-qualify

Serious buyers want to confirm you can hold their part before they enquire. A structured machine list — travels, spindle, control, bar and table sizes — lets them do that in ten seconds. Leave it off and you’ll field calls for work you can’t take, and miss enquiries from buyers who assumed you couldn’t.

For a lot of machining work — aerospace, medical, defence — the quality system is the qualification. AS9100, ISO 9001, first-article and inspection capability aren’t decoration; they’re the thing a buyer checks before they’ll release parts to you. A generalist drops the logos in the footer. What you actually want is those credentials given real, structured pages, so they surface in search and in AI answers and stand up to due diligence.

An RFQ flow built for machining, not a generic contact form

“Contact Us → name, email, message” is where machining enquiries go to die. A buyer with a drawing wants to send the drawing, plus the things you need to quote: material, quantity, tolerance, target date. Build that, and the enquiry arrives scoped — you quote from real information instead of chasing basics, and the buyer feels like they’re dealing with people who understand the work. (And it needs to handle a customer’s file securely and sit comfortably alongside an NDA, because controlled geometry is often exactly what’s being sent.)

Proof that speaks to their kind of work

A machine shop competing on competence, not headcount, wins at the shortlist stage on evidence. Case studies and real examples that show the sectors you serve and the complexity you handle do more than any amount of “family-run since 1974.” A generalist doesn’t know that a photo of a finished 5-axis part reassures a buyer more than a stock image of a factory. You do.

The through-line

None of this is about making the site prettier. It’s about building it around the specific way a technical buyer evaluates a machine shop — findable capability, self-qualification, credible accreditation, a real RFQ, relevant proof. Get those right and a modest-looking site out-performs a beautiful one that treats your shop like any other small business.
