The starting point
Adaero Precision Components is a UK CNC machining business in Crediton, Devon. The engineering side of the operation is genuinely impressive — five-axis machining to ±5 micron accuracy, parts up to two metres long, batch sizes from single prototypes to over 5,000 units. They serve aerospace, motorsport, medical, scientific instruments, and seven other industry verticals. They’re certified to ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001, plus Cyber Essentials Plus and JOSCAR — the last of which signals readiness for the UK defence supply chain.
None of which you’d have guessed from the previous website.
Before the 2024 rebuild, Adaero’s online presence was a single template-era brochure page. The Wayback Machine snapshot from December 2021 — visible on the slider above — shows the whole thing: a navigation strip across the top linking to in-page anchors (Home, Capability, Quality, Contacts, About, Careers, Image Gallery), the Adaero logo, an address block top-right, the ISO 9001 and 14001 certification badges, an Indutrade group affiliation, and three short content sections underneath labelled Development, Production and Quality. That was the entire site. No proper services pages. No industry positioning. No case studies. No SEO foundation worth the name.
For a CNC machining business pitching for aerospace and defence supply contracts, the gap between the actual engineering depth and the digital presentation was costing real revenue. The brief was straightforward: build a website that matches the engineering.
This was inside the same group of companies I was working across at the time, so the project came together through internal planning sessions across a few weeks rather than an external pitch.
The verticals-led structure
The single biggest decision in the architecture was leading with industry verticals rather than machining capabilities.
The conventional CNC website is organised around what the company does — milling, turning, five-axis, sliding-head. That mental model makes sense to engineers but not to procurement buyers, who arrive at the site asking “can this supplier make the part I need, for my industry, with the certifications my supply chain requires?”
The new Adaero site is organised around the answer to that question:
- Aerospace — actuators, servo actuators, precision-tolerance components for flight-critical applications.
- Forensic equipment — document analysis, light sources, trace evidence detection.
- Gas & fluid control — detection equipment, hydraulics, manifolds.
- Industrial laser — textile, food marking, and cutting laser components.
- Medical equipment — tonometers, anaesthesia machines, otoscopes.
- Motorsport — hydraulics, connectors, control systems.
- Optical — lens mounts, camera housings, eyepieces.
- Scientific instruments — spectroscopy, etch equipment, research instruments.
- Specialist engineering — ground-penetrating radar, pipeline mapping.
Nine verticals, each with its own page, each describing the component types Adaero actually machines for that industry and the precision tolerances required. A procurement buyer from a medical-device OEM lands on the medical equipment page, sees specific examples that match what they need, and understands within thirty seconds that this is a credible supplier for their job.
The machining capabilities (5-axis, milling, turning, palletised, sliding head, twin spindle) are still on the site — they live one level down, under Capabilities. They matter for the technical conversation that happens after the initial fit decision. They don’t have to lead.
The certifications, treated as a hero asset
A second decision worth flagging: how the certifications are positioned.
For a CNC supplier, the accreditations aren’t a footnote — they’re often the gating criterion for whether the prospect can even use you. ISO 9001 is the quality management standard most aerospace and medical buyers will require. ISO 14001 (environmental) is increasingly mandatory in supply-chain audits. ISO 45001 (occupational health & safety) the same. Cyber Essentials Plus is the UK government’s cyber-security standard, required for many defence-adjacent suppliers. And JOSCAR is the Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register — a real signal that the business is set up for defence sector supply contracts.
On the old site: none of these were mentioned at all. On the new site: they’re given visual weight in the trust strip and treated as part of the procurement-readiness signal, not as boilerplate.
That single change — moving the accreditations from invisible to visible — is the kind of thing that doesn’t drive traffic but converts the traffic that arrives. A procurement officer doing a supplier shortlist sees JOSCAR + ISO 9001 + Cyber Essentials Plus on the page and the supplier passes the initial filter without needing a follow-up email.
The visual approach
The new Adaero site leans into a dark, deliberately considered visual treatment. The hero photograph is the engineering itself — machined metal components, shot in low warm light, with the Adaero logo unobtrusively top-left and the CNC Machining Services headline in white serif type over the image.
The choice of dark mode wasn’t decorative. Precision engineering competitors in the UK CNC market mostly default to a high-contrast white background with stock photos of generic factory floors. The Adaero treatment deliberately doesn’t look like that. The dark theme reads as “this business takes its presentation as seriously as its tolerances” — which is the impression the engineering itself earns but the previous website actively undermined.
Typography uses a high-contrast serif for the major headings and a clean sans-serif for body copy, with generous spacing and a slow visual rhythm. The whole site reads as considered rather than busy, which is the right impression for an engineering supplier where being busy-looking isn’t a virtue.
The hero subhead — “We manufacture high quality components, so you can launch your projects with the guarantee of precision.” — is also worth flagging. It doesn’t say what Adaero does (the headline does that). It says what the buyer’s outcome is when they choose Adaero. That’s the right framing for a B2B audience — every component, every tolerance, every certification is in service of the buyer’s project not getting blamed for failing.
What’s under the bonnet
The site is built on WordPress with a custom theme, hosted on a LiteSpeed-optimised setup. The CMS choice was right for Adaero because their team needed to be able to update capabilities, add industry pages, and adjust certifications without a developer touching it every time. A modern static framework would have been faster but would have meant locking content edits behind a developer — not the right trade-off here.
Within the WordPress constraints, the build was tuned for the things that matter most to a procurement audience: a clean information architecture, fast-loading hero imagery, structured data so search engines understand the business is a CNC machining service in Crediton with specific accreditations, and a sitemap that exposes every industry vertical page to indexing.
What this case study is really about
The visible change here is one of the most dramatic before/afters I’ve shipped — a literal one-page brochure replaced with a properly architected technical-marketing presence. But the more interesting change isn’t visual. It’s structural.
A CNC machining business with nine industry verticals, five major accreditations and the precision capability to compete in aerospace supply chains is a meaningfully different business from what the previous website suggested. The old site implied a generic regional shop. The new site reveals what’s actually there: a credible UK precision engineering supplier with the certifications and the technical specification to play in defence, aerospace and medical supply chains.
The website wasn’t the cause of that capability. But the website was hiding it.
